2025 Nissan Altima luggage test: average, or something more?

Come on, it’s an Autoblog tradition. The Nissan Altima’s focus isn’t necessarily on luggage and cargo hauling, but as Nissan’s mid-size sedan, it should still be fairly competent when it comes to moving your stuff around. Here’s a look at how the 2025 Nissan Altima’s cargo and trunk capacity fare in the real world.

By the numbers, the 2025 Nissan Altima is only average

The trunk space for the 2025 Nissan Altima sits at a modest 15.4 cu. ft. That’s within 0.3 cubic feet of three serious competitors for the car: Subaru Legacy (15.1 cu. ft.), Kia K5 (15.6 cu. ft.), and Toyota Camry (15.1 cu. ft.).

Remember when we said “conspicuously average?” Two other competitors, the Hyundai Sonata (16 cu. ft.) and the Honda Accord (16.7 cu. ft.), offer gains that are minimal but could be noticeable. The Altima, like all of its rivals, comes with 60/40 split-folding rear seats.

Real-world cargo capacity is good overall but not perfect

Just like every cargo test, we have four pieces of cargo crammed into the Altima. The black duffel measures 11.5 x 18.5 x 9.0, and the striped bag measures 21.3 x 10.3 x 11.8. In addition to those two, you’ll see a blue roller case measuring 13.6 x 9.5 x 20.9 and a teal/green bag measuring 16.1 x 8.3 x 15.7.

Things aren’t that tight when the Altima gets loaded up, with room for a few bags to go on top of ours when positioned properly. The trunk is pretty deep, too, so if you regularly keep an emergency kit or similar in your trunk, you’ll still have space for cargo when needed.

The wheel well cutouts are a little oddly shaped, and it would’ve been nice to see a more stacking-friendly design that could’ve opened up some more usable space.

The ceiling is also pretty high, with no overly intrusive items like speakers hanging from the trunk roof and hinges that minimally impact cargo space. Folding the seats down is easy via levers in the trunk, even though I missed them several times as I was expecting a release in the cabin. This was unintuitive for me, but it is likely not a problem for most people. Like with most sedans, the seats don’t fold completely flat, but we won’t hold that against it.

Final thoughts

Overall, the 2025 Nissan Altima’s cargo-hauling prowess is average. The space is fine for daily activities like hauling groceries, and groups shouldn’t have trouble stacking and packing for three- to four-day trips.

However, your schlepping needs may be better met by one of the many whimsical compact SUVs the brand has fathered over the years. Who could forget such geometry-influenced gems as the ovoid Nissan Juke or the aptly named Nissan Cube?
