Porsche's 2025 911 Lineup: Get Ready For a New Flagship 911 and Heritage Design Throwback

The 911 legacy continues

The Porsche 911 is one of the most enduring vehicles in sports car history. Its ubiquity is almost entirely unrivaled, partially because of Porsche’s dedication to keeping the model competitive and partially because of the incredible prices that well-heeled collectors are willing to pay for them. An annual report from Porsche outlines what’s ahead for the 911 in 2025, and it looks like it’s going to be a big year for Stuttgart’s sports car.

Porsche promises an “additional flagship model,” likely the 992.2 GT2 RS

First, the annual press conference promised a new flagship model of the vaunted 911 that “will raise the bar even further in the sports car segment.” That’s almost guaranteed to be pointing us toward the 992.2 generation of the GT2 RS, historically the highest performing 911 variant at any given time.

As a reminder, the last GT2 RS—the 991.2 generation—debuted in 2017 touting a twin-turbo, 700-horsepower 3.8-liter flat-six paired exclusively to a seven-speed automatic PDK transmission. It’s still the most powerful 911 variant ever, although it seems likely that the 992.2 generation would dethrone it. Admittedly, we’re not sure how. Rumors circulate about a new hybrid setup borrowed from the GTS that could help a new GT2 RS achieve truly over-the-top performance numbers. We’ll have to wait and see, because Porsche isn’t ready to say any more just yet.

The third of four total Heritage Design Strategy cars will arrive this year

The 911 is a piece of history, and Porsche leans on that legacy heavily at times. Nowhere is it more obvious than with their Heritage Design cars. The next Heritage Design car will “revive the style of the 1970s,” and will be the third of four total Heritage cars for the current 911 generation.

In case you forgot, we’ve already seen the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition, which was limited to just 992 units, back in 2020. That was the first of the Heritage Design Edition cars, featuring paint and upholstery options unavailable elsewhere in the lineup with design cues from the model’s history, like 1963-style badging and a livery with white accents.

The 911 Sport Classic

The Targa was followed by the manual-only 911 Sport Classic, which was limited to 1,250 examples, in 2023. The Sport Classic was particularly sought after, as it paired a toned-down version of the 911 Turbo’s engine with a desirable manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. We have little idea what Porsche has in store for the next Heritage Design Car, but if history is any indicator, we’re reasonably certain it will be sold out before you can get one. Particularly if it’s anything like the enthusiast special Sport Classic model.

Final thoughts

Love it or hate it, the Porsche 911 is an icon. And as long as Porsche people are willing to pay up, you can rest assured that Stuttgart will continue to celebrate with hyper-exclusive 911 models, whether they’re destined to drip with nostalgia at your local cars and coffee or challenge the laws of physics on a racetrack. In that sense, this is a regular year for the 911—even if the variants coming are anything but ordinary.
